Police raids in the north west of England on 16 November shocked many people.

Five men were arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences.

Israr Malik, 21, of Fallowfield, Manchester, is charged with intending to commit acts of terrorism.

Matthew Newton, 27, of Stalybridge, Munir Farooqi, 52, of Longsight, and Haris Farooqi, 26, of Levenshulme, are accused of intending to assist others to commit acts of terrorism.

Munir Farooqi was also charged with three counts of soliciting or encouraging another person to murder on three separate dates.

Muslim cleric Shaykh Asif Hussain Farooqui from Bolton was released without charge. Around 200 people protested outside the police station where he was being held. Hundreds more signed an online petition in his support.

Nahella Ashraf, the chair of Manchester Stop the War Coalition, said, “Muslims are being made to be seen as the enemy within. We need to stand together against this.”

A campaign to prove the four men’s innocence has been launched. They are due to appear in the Old Bailey on 4 December.
