Greater Manchester Stop the War Coalition does not have millionaire backers. It relies solely on donations from individual supporters to finance its operations. The warmongers, the arms traders, the private armies of mercenaries and their PR and media flunkies have millions to spend on inflicting misery and suffering in the war zones of the world.

By contrast, the anti-war movement operates on a shoe string budget--yet on 15th February 2003 the Stop the War Coalition was responsible for possibly the largest demonstration in British history. We now know that this event made Blair consider resigning from office. He wobbled and eventually he was forced out because he supported a war too many--the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. There were even bigger demonstrations in Italy and Spain and there is no reason why we cannot get even more people on the streets of Britain given that there are going to be further predatory wars.

Every day brings more news about ongoing wars, threats of new wars, sabre-rattling, "rendition", torture, Islamophobia, millions of displaced people, racist attacks on asylum seekers, never-ending attacks on civil liberties, injuries, death and destruction. War is not going to go away. Iraq's oil industry is about to be privatised under the control of foreign oil companies--which says it all.
